Solar Battery Installation, Melbourne

Melbourne gets meaningfully less annual sunshine than Brisbane or Sydney, which changes the maths on battery sizing — getting the most out of a smaller solar generation window matters more here than in the subtropics. Melbourne's older housing stock is also a factor most installers gloss over: many established suburbs still run older switchboards that need assessment or upgrading before a battery and inverter can be safely connected. We design and install battery systems for Melbourne homes and businesses, using Tesla, Sungrow, BYD and Alpha ESS batteries, installed by our own CEC-accredited team.

Current battery incentives for Victoria

It's worth being direct about this, since a lot of Victorian battery guides are out of date: Solar Victoria's state battery loan program closed in May 2025 and has not been replaced. There is currently no active state-level battery rebate in Victoria.

The support that is available:

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program — an upfront, point-of-sale discount through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), available on eligible batteries (5–100kWh) Australia-wide, including Victoria.

Solar Victoria's solar panel (PV) rebate — up to $1,400 off panels (not batteries), plus an optional matching interest-free loan, for eligible households under the current income threshold. If you're installing solar and a battery together, this can be combined with the federal battery discount.

Because Victoria's settings are genuinely different from Queensland's or NSW's, we confirm exactly what you're eligible for during your free assessment rather than assume a state battery rebate applies.

Why Melbourne households are adding batteries

Maximising a shorter solar window — with less annual sunshine than northern states, storing what you do generate (instead of exporting it at a low feed-in rate) has a proportionally bigger impact on your bill in Melbourne.

Older switchboards and wiring —
many Melbourne homes, especially in established inner and middle-ring suburbs, need a switchboard assessment before battery installation. We check this upfront so it's not a surprise mid-project.

Time-of-use tariffs —
several Victorian retailers price electricity higher during evening peak periods; a battery shifts your usage away from that window.

VPP participation —
several Victorian retailers (not government-run) offer Virtual Power Plant enrolment with sign-up bonuses and enhanced feed-in rates for battery owners — this isn't a rebate, but it materially affects payback time and we can advise on options during your assessment.

How we size your Melbourne battery

With less solar generation to work with than northern states, sizing accuracy matters more here — an oversized battery in Melbourne is less likely to reach full charge on an average day. We size your system from your actual usage pattern and existing or planned solar capacity, not a fixed package.
